Russell Johnson, the actor best known for playing the Professor on TV’s hit sitcom “Gilligan’s Island,” died Thursday at 89.

Johnson played Professor Roy Hinkley in the CBS series for three years.

If Johnson had his way, you wouldn’t be remembering him as the Professor on “Gilligan’s Island.”

Johnson told AP Radio in 1993, he wished he had never done the role.

He said his career “took an absolute right turn” and never got back on track. But he figured what was done was done. He said he made the decision and he lived “with the results of it.”

Johnson died at home of natural causes.
