Country superstar Garth Brooks has won a legal battle against a former employee, who now has to repay the singer more than $200,000, which she believed was a gift.

The former CEO for Brooks’ California-based TV and movie production company Red Strokes Entertainment, Lisa Sanderson, has lost the war against her longtime friend.

Brooks initially hit Sanderson with the lawsuit after she refused to pay back a $226,000 loan for divorce and child custody expenses, which the singer gave her between 2005 and 2007. She argued that the generous donation was a gift, but last week, a federal jury in Nashville, Tennessee sided with Brooks, after his lawyers presented several documents to support his claim that he expected repayment.

Sanderson has to pay back not only what he loaned to her, but interest from the past six years, legal fees and collection costs, according to local newspaper The Tennessean.

The jury also denied Sanderson’s claim for retirement compensation after Red Strokes Entertainment closed its doors in 2010, since there was no legal documentation proving she was owed any money.

Brooks’ win over Sanderson is the latest in his ongoing legal battle with his former business associate – last year, she sued him for $425,000 in unpaid bonuses, salary and punitive damages.

A trial concerning that matter is slated to be held in Los Angeles at a date that has yet to be set.
