Honor Flight

HONOR FLIGHT

The goal of Honor Flight is to send World War II veterans to see their memorial in Washington D.C. - the memorial wasn't built until recently and the veterans are dying at a rate of about 1000 a day!

Last fall, you helped us raise enough money to send three Honor Flights! Honor Flight II is scheduled for May 23 and 24 - the veterans will spend the night in Washington and return to Flightstar on May 24th at 7:30pm - JOIN US FOR THE WELCOME HOME CELEBRATION!

Gates at the Welcome Home Celebration will open at 5pm - a military band will perform as we await the arrival of the veterans. More details to come!

After the Changing of the Guard, the veterans heard from and met Sgt. Skywalker. Interesting note: he was on the Illini Basketball practice squad under Bill Self. He ended up transferring to UI Springfield.

The AF Memorial was the first stop on the trip. It's a striking memorial. I especially like the photo of the veteran standing tall in front of the bronze Airmen. Everyone is already loaded and on the way to Arlington National Cemetary!

The plane has landed

As the veterans deplane, a nice crowd is there to greet them, cheering and playing music. The crowd is, basically, passengers on other flights at the airport gathered to show their respect. The veterans will board one of three buses (Red, White, or Blue) - first stop is the Air Force Memorial!
